Comments:

The Oncology Specific Maintenance of Professional Standards Programme (OSMOPS) is a voluntary programme introduced in 1998 with the aim of encouraging medical oncologists to undertake continuing educational activities so that the highest standards of clinical practice and patient care will continue to be provided. OSMOPS also provides a formalised procedure to demonstrate participation in the quality improvement model of continuing medical education and quality assurance for such purposes as employment and medical defence.

The OSMOPS program is structured around a five year rolling cycle in which participants annually self report their involvement in continuing education activities with the goal of achieving a minimum number of points over a five year period. Points can be accumulated in three main categories: continuing education; teaching & research and quality assurance.Only medical oncologists who are members of both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia (MOGA) are able to participate in the OSMOPS programme. While the programme is voluntary all members of MOGA are actively encouraged to participate.

The resource contains three sections:

Section one: Epidemiology provides an overview of the epidemiology of cancer in Indigenous populations, looks at cultural factors affecting cancer control in Indigenous communities, and discusses health and health policy for Indigenous Australians.

Section two: Constructs of cultural safety presents information on cultural safety and respect, effective communication, and describes a number of characteristics unique to Indigenous cultures. It reviews factors contributing to the inequalities of cancer outcomes for Indigenous people and provides a cultural appraisal framework.

Section three: Nursing care for Indigenous people with cancer examines the ability of the Specialist Cancer Nurse (SCN) to recognise factors that influence Indigenous peoples' attitudes toward cancer, and use cancer prevention programs and other resources developed for Indigenous people. It examines nursing interventions to meet the health needs of Indigenous people affected by cancer.

Confidence-Based Learning (CBL) oncology/hematology modules use the CBL System patented by Knowledge Factor, which enables participants to master the curriculum so they can treat their patients correctly and confidently.

The CBL System diagnoses 'true knowledge' - what you actually know versus what you think you know - and identifies where there is doubt or misinformation. Courses then target specific needs through an accelerated learning process, which results in participants learning the material with complete confidence to become better able to treat their patients.

Accelerated mastery of the content happens in 4 steps:

  1. Answer Questions. This is a small subset of diagnostic questions to determine what you already know and don't know. If you answer the questions honestly, the learning process will be faster and more effective.
  2. Submit Responses. This takes you into the Learning Center, where your personalized learning plan lives.
  3. Learn. Following your personalized learning plan, you will learn the information in a fashion organized to fill your knowledge and confidence gaps.
  4. Continue. Continue this process until you have learned and mastered all the content.

Available courses include:

  • The Emerging Role of Epothilones in Treating Resistant/Refractory Metastatic Breast Cancer
  • Management of Poor Risk Patients with Non Small Cell Lung Cancer
  • Progress and Challenges in the Management of Patients with Iron Overload
  • Maximising Treatment Benefit for Patients with Colorectal Cancer - Current Concepts and Unanswered Questions

The Professional Cancer Profiler tools are free, comprehensive tools that repurpose scientific publications to provide fast access to evidence based clinical information at the point-of-care, to ensure more informed decisions for Healthcare Professionals. They are interactive decision support tools that answer the question "What does the clinical information mean to me?"

Healthcare Professional Cancer Tools are available for the following tumour streams:

  • Breast
  • Bladder
  • Colorectal
  • Lung - Non-Small Cell
  • Lung - Small Cell
  • Melanoma
  • Ovarian
  • Prostate

In addition to standard searching by keyword, author and journal title, our next generation search technology also allows you to search based on modeling a patient case using our clinical profile criteria or "Virtual Case Model" (VCM).

VCM searches will allow you to describe search parameters in terms of the clinical presentation of a patient. You can enter parameters such as age, performance status, stage, test results, and many other descriptive parameters to find relevant published literature that matched the VCM. Results will also be based on each study’s inclusion criteria, ensuring that only scientifically correct literature is found that is relevant to the VCM.

The Graph Results by Treatment Report sorts your search results by treatment category. Each treatment category separates out studies that compare treatments "head to head", so they can be viewed separately from studies that reviewed single treatments.

For all other studies where the inclusion criteria matches, you can view the credibility of each study based on whether they were:

  • Randomized or Non Randomized
  • Multi Center or Single Center
  • Meta Analysis or Non Meta Analysis

Each Study Report consists of the Title, Author(s), Publication Information, Abstract/Review and Data Graphs/Tables. In addition to simply reading the information, there is the opportunity to interact with the key algorithms, data tables, etc. in each study. Change the VCM within each study to view how these key algorithms produce new results - a "3-D view" of the science within a publication. Upon change, the report will recalculate the graphs and tables based on the new values for an easy yet powerful "what if" analysis.

Tools are also available for patients and care givers to personalize a treatment options report tailored to their diagnosis. The report provide information about the pros and cons of each treatment, side effects, questions to ask physicians, plus access to relevant summaries of clinical studies.
